Some classes will be included on your schedule to help you satisfy the General Education requirements which are considered a part of the first-year experience.INTS 102: Transitions: Succeeding at Houghton (1 cr.) All first-year students are required to have this orientation class as a part of their first-semester schedule.
Humanities: Enduring Questions (3 cr.)
All first-years students (except those in the London & Science Honors Programs) should expect to be enrolled in one of the following courses:
These classes comprise the Humanities sequence here at Houghton. In this sequence of courses, students explore Western history as a developing story with texts and ideas in conversation and conflict with each other—not simply events on a timeline. Students see how people from different eras responded to the most important questions of their day. Students thus develop ideas about how to approach the questions of their own society and culture.
In these classes, the great ideas and texts from philosophy and literature are taught in their historical context. This means that students not only learn about the foundational ideas that shaped western culture, but also see why these ideas developed when and how they did.WRIT 101: Writing in the Liberal Arts and/or BIBL 101: Biblical Literature
Students are normally expected to complete their WRIT 101 and BIBL 101 requirements during their first year, so there is a high likelihood that one of these classes may be included as a part of your first-semester schedule.
The requirement involves taking two social science courses, each of which must come from a different specialty within the social sciences. The specialties are listed below:
Because Houghton’s mission is to prepare students to lead and labor in a changing world, all students receive preparation for interacting with a dynamic and culturally diverse world. Students can choose to study a language and build their skills of cross-cultural communication in this way or they can take other courses that are designed to prepare them to understand, interact with, and engage other cultures.
In addition to your General Education preferences, you will be assigned courses to bring your load to at least 12 hours. A student needs 12 hours to be considered a full-time student. These additional courses will be selected from the recommended first year courses for the major you have indicated.
You will meet with your faculty academic advisor during the fall semester to plan your subsequent semesters and your major requirements.
Depending on how many credit hours you wish to take, there MAY be room in your schedule for elective courses.
15-16 hours are recommended; 12 to 18 hours are within the flat tuition rate. First year students may not take more than 17 hours unless they are participating in the Highlander Wilderness Adventure Program.
